The James River State Park in Buckingham County Virginia is a must for anybody who likes to camp, be outdoors, bird watch, fish, kayak, canoe, horseback ride, or just relax.The James River State Park has 20 miles of hiking, biking and, horseback riding trails on its 1500 acres of grassy meadows and forests. With three miles of river frontage you can camp just feet from the river. The views from the banks of the James River are awesome and you can also launch your boat into the river here

Step 1 The James River
The James River State Park has many wonderful things to explore. The wildlife and habitat that call the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains home are abundant. Whether you choose floating, fishing or hiking, you can enjoy awe-inspiring views found only at James River State ParkGetting a reservation for camping during the off season(December 1st -December 30th) is fairly easy but during the prime months( May 22nd- September 7th) and (October 1st -October 31st) you need to make plans well in advance. If you want to camp at The James River State Park over the Fourth of July make your reservations in January. The James River State Park is open year round.
Step 2 Camping in a camper at state parks
The James River State Park offers sixteen cabins if you’re not a fan of roughing it, and two lodges that have six bedrooms each. There are two types of camping sites: primitive camping which is tent only, and has no running water or electricity even in the camp restrooms, and camping sites with water and electricity and a full service bathhouse with laundry facilities. You can tent camp or bring your RV to these sites. There is also a primitive horse camping only area for those who want to bring their horse and take advantage of the 17 miles of horse trails.
Step 3 Camping gear and tent in the parks
What you take camping with you depends on which type of camping you plan on doing, primitive, R.V. or horse. Whichever camping you do choose, you will want to take plenty of food. There is a small camp store but it does not offer too much as far as food stuffs, and they are only open on the weekends. Make sure you take your fishing poles. Even if you’re not a fisherman, you will catch a fish in one of the park’s three ponds, and a camera is an absolute must. If you have never been camping you may want to check out some camping lists so you don’t forget anything. Firewood is available at the park.
